Striving for perfect

Being perfect or the underlying urge to make something perfect is sometimes the root of all evil and it can stop you from achieving those little (or  big) goals we set ourselves. Let me explain – how often do we find ourselves backing out of something, giving up or saying no based on the fact it isn’t going to perfect, the way we think it should or could be. How many of us battle with the shadow of perfectionism each day? When you embark on a project and your half way along – the project starts to detour, the vision you set for yourself isn’t paying off and you can’t see the end as you pictured it. It is at this point we give up – the strive for perfection hinders our ability to see beyond the small hurdle (however I am sure it feels much bigger at the time). Why is being perfect an expectation we put on ourselves. It is just like the other day when I decided to take a couple of photos – the search for the perfect light, flicking between manual and auto settings – trying many ways I could take one photo – I didn’t just take one photo, I took around 60 (of the one subject) and it didn’t take me 5 minutes – it took 50. Yes – the struggle was real. The frustration we set upon ourselves when we just want it to be perfect. The thing is we aren’t photographers or skilled in this area, we test ourselves to try something new and to keep going. We want to keep learning and to never give up… sometimes we might just need to settle for just under perfect and look at the achievement or the new skill learnt. That can be perfect too.
